I originally created it as an ultimatum for my youngest son when he was in his early twenties. At the time, we were passing some time in Puerto Rico, one of my favorite hide outs during cold, grey Kentucky winters. The peacefully rhythmic sound of waves was abruptly replaced with that of someone tossing cookies. That sound quickly grabbed my attention. It was my hijo (ee-hoe Spanish for “son”). He was violently retching up the very last remnants of an apparently bad seafood meal. It was evidently really bad for him and his very distressed gut.
We had eaten dinner at, what we now, not so affectionately, refer to as the “No Bueno Cafe”. Bueno is Spanish for good. My son had switched meals with his vegan girlfriend. Due to the language barrier, she had ordered something far from vegan. Being the good boyfriend, he ended up eating the dish. It was a bowl of some kind of seafood mixture cooked in a cheese and cream base. Even with out alcohol involved, the meal did not stay down.
When I got to my child, he was laying on the bathroom floor, curled up in the fetal position, sweating, shivering and appearing to be on the brink of a seizure. This had become a regularly recurring scene when he was in his early 20’s. Not the switching of meals, but the being violently sick to his stomach. He was in bad shape and I was becoming increasingly fearful. Not something I enjoy.
Driven by fear, I put my research cap on and came up with a protocol to heal his very disrupted gut. Once it was completed and I felt confident in its ability to accomplish the task, I undiplomatically offered my son a choice. Actually, my offspring refer to it as “the illusion of choice”. Follow my protocol or go to the doctor.
Now, don’t get the wrong idea, I have nothing against most doctors. The fact is, my life has been saved more than once by more than one doctor, including the time our black angus bull mistook me for a rodeo clown. With that being said, our family is not exactly pharmaceutically minded. We treat what we can at home and we treat stuff as naturally as possible. Because we can.
My bachelor degree is in Corporate Fitness, Exercise and Nutrition where I not only studied human anatomy and physiology but I took every Red Cross course under the sun. Then there is the plethora of other certifications, including one as a First Responder which prepared me to volunteer on an ambulance crew. This all equipped me to take care of most of the medical emergencies that my family has encountered through the years. It also primed me to be somewhat of an expert in research. I’m on a mission to share what I have learned with whoever has the guts to do what everyone wants. That is to live more naturally.
Recall that I originally created the following protocol for my son and that he was provided the illusion of choice. Of course, he chose to follow the Gut Protocol. Spoiler alert, it worked. Gradually, his episodes became less violent and less frequent. Happily surprised at how much better he began to feel, he started telling his buddies and sharing the protocol with them. I also began sharing it with my friends and with my farmers’ market customers. Hopefully, you will find it valuable and share it with your tribe.
It is said that our gut is our second brain. It is said that our bodies remember trauma, both physical and emotional. It is also said that the remembered trauma is a major cause of illness. The human experience intrinsically contains trauma, both physical and emotional. Humans will experience losses both physically and emotionally. No one is exempt.
Apparently some people handle the trauma better, or perhaps just differently than others. We all have our own unique way of coping or not coping. What we all have in common is that our traumas impact our guts. It is not just my family members who need a hand dealing with issues experienced by their second brain. Everyone, including you, could use some help with creating a healthier gut.

Betaine HCI Pepsin – If you suspect low stomach acid, start by taking 1 Betaine hydrochloride (HCL) with each protein rich meal. Add an additional one, again with a protein rich meal, until you feel a burning sensation in your gut. This is the symptom of having too much acid. Most people start with too little acid in their guts, perhaps from using antacids, perhaps from their overall diet.
L-Glutamine – start by mixing 5 grams into a cool beverage and work up to 20 grams per day. Take 20 grams a day until you start to feel better. At that point you can use a maintenance dose of 3-5 grams per day. It is best taken on an empty stomach mixed into a cool beverage, water is fine.
Marshmallow Root – take 6 grams per day. The dosage can be split up. You should only take marshmallowroot for four weeks at atime. Be sure to take a one-week break before resuming use.
Slippery Elm – take 7000 grams every morning and before each meal.
DGL – deglycyrrhizinated licorice take one 400 – 800 mg tablet 30 minutes BEFORE meals.
Quercetin Dihydrate – take 3-6 gm per day
Vitamin A – It’s recommended that men get 900 mcg, women 700 mcg and children and adolescents 300–600 mcg of vitamin A per day
Vitamin D – supplement to maintain a blood level of at least 50 ng/mL, preferably above 60 ng/mL
How To Use The Products:
Betaine hydrochloride (HCL) promotes optimal gastric acidity for support of protein digestion and absorption of minerals and other nutrients such as vitamin B12. To see if you have low stomach acid and are in need of HCL replacement, ⅓ of the way into your meal take 650 mg of HCL and then finish your meal. If you experience heartburn, you have sufficient levels of HCL. If you do not experience any burning sensation in your upper abdomen, then you likely would benefit from HCL at each meal. Raw apple cider vinegar is a gentler alternative to HCL. Digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid have the ability to help a damaged gut fully digest foods. This helps reduce the amount of partially digested, toxic particles that are impacting your intestinal lining. You can take a capsule with each meal to give your gut an extra boost during this sensitive time.
L-Glutamine is an amino acid that has been shown to be effective in healing leaky gut in numerous studies. Glutamine protects your gut lining from future damage and helps you reverse existing damage. Foods high in glutamine come primarily from animal sources, including: bone broth, grass fed (and finished) beef, chicken & eggs. Take up to 20 grams of L-Glutamine per day with water or other cool beverages. It’s best to break this up and not take it with meals. A good maintenance level would be about 3 to 5 grams per day.
Marshmallow root and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) are two adaptogenic herbs that help the gut in several ways. They stimulate the production of protective mucus, decrease inflammation of the stomach lining, help the gastrointestinal lining, reduce digestive discomfort such as constipation and diarrhea and improve acid function. You should only take marshmallowroot forfourweeksat a time. Be sure to take a one-week break before resuming use.
Quercetin is a flavonoid that naturally stabilizes mast cells and reduces the amount of histamine they release – this significantly reduces inflammation and further damage to the gut lining. Quercetin also tightens up the intestinal barrierand function, which essentially helps to seal the leakiness. You should only take quercetin in powder form – 3 to 6 grams daily is recommended.
Vitamins A and D are two recommended to people with any sort of intestinal immune dysfunction. They help your body secrete Immunoglobulin A, which is critical to your immune system function and mucous membranes. These are two vitamins that will help rebuild your gut and immune system quickly. Low levels of Vitamin D are being increasingly linked to a multitude of health issues.
Slippery Elm: Take this every morning around 8 a.m., 30 mins before eating.
Rotate foods except gluten, non-cultured dairy, sugar, soy, corn, egg and alcohol. All of these should be avoided 100%.
To combat leaky gut syndrome, eat foods that promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, including fruits, cultured dairyproducts, healthy fats, lean meats as well as fibrous and fermented vegetables. You can also take probiotic supplements, reduce stress, limit NSAID use, avoid alcohol and get more sleep.
